Mandarin and Cantonese are not mutually intelligible. People who only speak Mandarin usually don't know Cantonese, and Cantonese pronunciation is much more complicated. But most Chinese can understand Mandarin.
The characters used in Mandarin and Cantonese have the same roots in ancient China, however, Mandarin uses simplified characters and Cantonese uses traditional characters. Most Chinese can read both, but hardly write about the other.
The grammar of both languages is almost identical, however, Mandarin often changes sentence structure depending on the emotional meaning of the sentence and the subject. Cantonese, on the other hand, follows a more logical pattern. One thing that can get tricky in Cantonese is using more idiomatic expressions, which require a higher level of linguistic expertise.
